Gold Dust Pizza Sutter Creek
To say that I am obsessed with pizza would be an understatement. It’s a staple in my diet, so a fantastic pizza find is something I can’t keep to myself. Gold Dust Pizza in Sutter Creek is the best pizza in all of California, and I’m sure you’ll agree!
I grew up on this pizza, so maybe that makes me biased. But I’d say that my lifetime love of it solidifies their considerable consistency and devotion to its customer base!
Can we talk about how cute the menu is? Sutter Creek is gold country, in the heart of the motherlode in Amador County. With antique touches and pizza names like “Eureka of a Deal” and “Miner Moe’s BBQ Chicken”, the details gesture to the gold rush era of the past.
Why Gold Dust Pizza Is The Best
Don’t take just my word for it. Gold Dust has won Best in Amador every year since 2013!
You will be hard pressed to find another pizza joint that tops their pizzas as generously as Gold Dust. All of their ingredients are incredibly fresh and plentiful. The rich tomato sauce is thick and seasoned perfectly. It’s the best!
My favorite parts of a pizza are a great sauce and delicious cheese. Gold Dust knocks it out of the park with both of these! They use a hearty layer of sauce and a very generous amount of high quality mozzarella.
As a self-declared pizza aficionado, I can tell you that great pizza comes from using high quality ingredients in every step. The dough is made fresh and hand stretched upon ordering. The super fresh toppings are applied liberally; you won’t find any scales or corporate dictation of quantity here. This combination is the trifecta of a perfect pizza!
Gold Dust Pizza in Sutter Creek is located just off of Main Street on Eureka Street. The restaurant is well designed and thought out, with specifics that incorporate the town and its history. It’s cozy and chic, and you can find details like mining equipment in the logo on the wallpaper and chandeliers in the main dining room.
Outside, you can enjoy your pizza on the enclosed front patio or in the back on a deck overlooking the creek. There is plenty of space for groups and families, and a grassy area for kids to get their energy out. You feel like you are somewhere special, and it’s far better than a chain pizza restaurant’s atmosphere.
The Beverage Offerings
Any pizza place that has a legit wine list makes me happy! Gold Dust offers local wines by the glass and the bottle. As you can see in the picture above, their wine prices are very reasonable! I highly recommend the Runquist 1448. You can also bring in your own bottle of wine for a $7 corkage fee, which is perfect since you are in wine country.
In addition to the great wine list, you will also find several beers on tap. These range from domestic to craft to imported beers, and are available by the mug or pitcher. Of course, a soda machine is also provided.
Who Owns Gold Dust Pizza?
Gold Dust Pizza is owned by Bob and Monica “Moe” Willey. Formerly known as Pizza Plus, the name was officially changed in 2015 after the opening of the Oakdale location. Sutter Creek is a special place to Bob and Moe. This is where they often visited when they were dating, and when the opportunity arose to open a Gold Dust Pizza in Sutter Creek, they jumped right on it!
An Awesome Team
A great restaurant doesn’t run itself. In fact, the National Restaurant Association estimates that on average 30% of restaurants fail within their first year. So it is definitely worth a shout out to the amazing team that makes Gold Dust run so successfully.
The general manager, Colton, is a large part of this pizza place’s success. His ability to run the restaurant has allowed Bob and Moe to focus on opening new Gold Dust locations. Fellow employees, Blake and Marcus, round out this awesome team. These three young men have been instrumental in the daily operations and outstanding customer service Gold Dust in known for.
History Behind Gold Dust Pizza Sutter Creek
The actual restaurant building itself is the original Wells Fargo Bank where the gold was kept during the heyday of the gold rush. Today, the huge vault in the basement still exists. After the bank, the location became a mercantile store and then Sutter Creek Coffee, where Bob and Moe frequented on their dates to Sutter Creek.
In the beginning of the restaurant days, the building was leased. But now Bob and Moe own the building. They were able to take their love of the area and the vision for their restaurant growth and create a local, award winning pizza experience you must try!
Other Gold Dust Pizza Locations
Ripon, Ca: The original location. This was Bob’s first pizza restaurant, and my siblings and I all worked here. My brother was one of the first employees to work for the Willeys. A new addition to this location is the Ice Cream Emporium right across the street.
Oakdale, Ca: A perfect stop when heading up Highway 108 for camping or skiing!
Copperopolis, Ca: Another Sierra Nevada foothill location, located in a Gilmore Girls style (thank you, daughter) town square. It’s fabulous date night location or guys night out, but is still family friendly and has a banquet room that can be reserved for parties.
The Willeys are generously involved in their local, small town communities. Everyone who lives in these towns are regulars at the restaurants. It is not unusual to see a packed house on weekend nights and local high school kids working behind the counter.
Be sure to try Gold Dust Pizza next time you are in Northern California!
